By Jeep Portsmouth
A smaller Jeep can make sense when the third row in your SUV spends most of its time folded. The big change is how you use the space behind the second row. The 2027 Jeep Compass gives you two rows, a short body and a turbo engine with standard 4x4. At Jeep Portsmouth on Lafayette Road, we can put the seats up and load the cargo area with the kinds of things you carry before you decide whether the change works for your household.
A Shorter Jeep for Lafayette Road Errands
The size difference shows up when you pull into a short parking space or reach the back of a one-car garage. Compass Latitude Altitude is 173.4 inches from bumper to bumper, 73.8 inches wide with its mirrors folded and 80.0 inches wide with mirrors. In a driveway in Dover where one side tends to collect a snowbank, the mirror width matters more than the painted fenders. Our Compass dimensions and capacities put those two widths next to each other.
The everyday payoff is a shorter vehicle to maneuver on errands and still a rear bench for passengers. A back-up camera comes standard on the Compass. Limited also has rear parking sensors, which give a warning as you close in on an obstacle. If the garage is tight at the back as well as the sides, the open liftgate uses room behind the bumper. That space is useful any time bags come in and out at home.
What Fits on a Rye Beach Day
A drive to Wallis Sands State Beach in Rye is a good example of the difference between a compact SUV and a longer one. With the seats upright, Latitude Altitude's 27.2 cubic feet is the space for the bags and cooler while passengers have the rear bench. The 59.8-cubic-foot measurement comes with the bench folded. The split rear seat is the useful middle setting. Part of the bench can stay up for a passenger while a long chair or another narrow item fits down the folded side.
At the dealership, a stroller or a hard cooler tells you more about the floor than a stack of empty bags. A rigid item has to clear the hatch opening and sit between or above the wheel wells. The foot-activated liftgate on Limited, Limited Altitude and Trailhawk is useful after a day on the sand when both hands are full. The Compass overview covers that equipment alongside the regular cargo and passenger features.
A Commute from Exeter or Dover
Downsizing the body still gets you a 200-hp turbocharged four-cylinder and a conventional eight-speed automatic. The Compass can carry a couple of passengers and weekday gear on Route 101 without the extra length of a larger Jeep. Adaptive cruise with stop and go is standard across the lineup. The rear cross-path alert and backup camera are the features you are more likely to use after pulling into a busy lot.
For a Dover commute with gear in the back and one driver using the car most of the week, Latitude is a good fit. It already has heated front seats and remote start. If two drivers trade places often, Limited's power seat and lumbar support make it easier to find a comfortable position, and its dual-zone climate control lets the front passenger set a different temperature. Compass trims also separate the screen-and-wheel changes in Latitude Altitude from the more substantial cabin changes in Limited.
When the Cherokee Is the Better Size
If trips from Stratham to Hampton regularly fill the second row and the cargo area, both Jeeps are worth seeing at the showroom. Cherokee has 33.6 cubic feet behind the rear seat, compared with 27.2 in the Compass Latitude Altitude. The Cherokee is 188.1 inches long. The difference buys more room for luggage with the back seat occupied, while the Compass takes up less space on the ground. Cherokee also runs a self-charging hybrid. Our Compass and Cherokee comparison puts the two powertrains and cargo measurements side by side.
Winter Driving and Service
A smaller body can still bring the traction settings you want for a wet or snowy New Hampshire morning. Selec-Terrain has a Snow mode on Latitude. Trailhawk is the choice when your driving regularly takes you onto rough surfaces and you want low-speed gearing, all-terrain tires and underbody shields. For pavement, the Latitude's all-season tire setup and a set of winter tires matched to your driving are a different decision from choosing Trailhawk's hardware.
Jeep Portsmouth can handle tire and brake checks as well as oil service for the Compass. A visit after a season on salty roads near Hampton is a chance to look at tread wear, check the brakes and see what the service schedule calls for next. The Compass maintenance and service guide lists the oil and filter service milestones. Our service scheduler connects you to the shop at the same location.

Compass Downsizing FAQs
How many passengers can ride in a Compass?
The Compass seats five across two rows. The rear seatback folds in sections. If you need to carry a long item and a passenger, try folding one section and checking whether the remaining rear seat stays usable with your gear in place.
Can I keep the rear seat upright and carry a stroller?
Latitude Altitude has 27.2 cubic feet behind the upright rear bench. A stroller’s folded length, width and height matter as much as the volume. Bring it to the test drive, load it with the rear seats up and see whether the liftgate closes easily.
Which Compass has the easier hatch when my hands are full?
Limited, Limited Altitude and Trailhawk all include a foot-activated power liftgate. Keep the key with you and try the motion below the rear bumper at the showroom. That tells you whether it helps when you are holding bags or keeping a hand free for a child.
What if I still need more luggage space on trips?
The Cherokee gives you 33.6 cubic feet behind its upright rear seat, compared with 27.2 on Compass Latitude Altitude. That matters most when the rear seats are occupied on trips. Try loading your largest bag or cooler before deciding whether you need the longer vehicle. See Compass questions and answers.
How do I set up a cargo-fit test drive?
Arrange a drive at Jeep Portsmouth, 2355 Lafayette Road, Portsmouth, NH 03801. Call (603) 431-8900 and say which Compass trim you want to try. If you are replacing a larger SUV, bring the gear you carry most and try loading it before you leave the lot.
