The NH factor
Corrosion first, and look underneath rather than at the paint. Road salt runs from roughly November through March across the state, and on the Seacoast coastal salt air works on the vehicle the rest of the year too. Check the frame and subframe, brake and fuel lines, exhaust hangers, suspension components and the metal around the wheel arches. Surface rust on an older New England vehicle is normal. Flaking, scaling or anything perforated is not.
Suspension and steering are second, because the freeze-thaw cycle opens potholes across NH by late February and years of that accumulate. Uneven tire wear, a pull on a straight road, or clunks over bumps are all worth raising before you buy.
On a Wrangler or Gladiator specifically, check where water gets in. Tops and doors come off, seals age, and a damp footwell or a corroded connector behind a trim panel causes electrical faults that look like anything but water. Soft tops, freedom-panel seals and the condition of the hardware are all worth a proper look.
