The 2026 Cherokee is offered in five trims: Cherokee, Laredo, Limited, 85th Anniversary Edition, and Overland. Every one uses the same standard hybrid powertrain and standard four-wheel drive, so stepping up the ladder is about features, wheels, and interior materials rather than a different engine. Engines & performance
Every 2026 Cherokee runs Stellantis’ new 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder hybrid, which pairs the gas engine with two electric motors and a small battery for a combined 210 horsepower and 230 lb-ft of torque, sent through a continuously variable transmission. That is about 30 more horsepower than the old Cherokee’s base four-cylinder, with far better fuel economy. There is no gas-only or V6 option this time, the hybrid is the only powertrain, on every trim.
No. The 2026 Cherokee is a conventional, self-charging hybrid, there is no plug and nothing to charge overnight. The small battery (about 1 kWh) is replenished by the engine and by regenerative braking as you drive, and it can run on electric power alone only for short, low-speed stretches. This is the first traditional, non-plug-in hybrid Jeep has sold in the U.S., and it is a different setup from the plug-in 4xe models. You fuel it at the gas pump like any other Cherokee.
Jeep rates the Cherokee at about 37 mpg combined, with independent figures landing near 39 mpg city and 35 mpg highway. Paired with the fuel tank, that adds up to more than 500 miles of range on a fill, useful on a longer coast-to-mountains run without a stop. For context, the previous Cherokee’s base engine returned only about 22 mpg combined, so the hybrid is a major efficiency jump. Real-world numbers move with driving style, load, and cold New England mornings.
Properly equipped, the 2026 Cherokee is rated to tow up to 3,500 pounds, which is at the strong end of the hybrid compact-SUV class, where many rivals tow far less. That covers a pair of personal watercraft, a small utility or boat trailer, or a compact teardrop camper for a weekend away. As always, the rating assumes the right hitch and towing setup and proper weight distribution, and the usable number drops once you load passengers and cargo. Features & technology
Yes, four-wheel drive is standard on every 2026 Cherokee, not a step-up option. That is the practical case for it in this part of the country: the standard system helps on a slushy, salt-slick on-ramp on a January morning, and it runs as front-wheel drive for efficiency until it senses it needs the rear wheels. The cabin centers on a 12.3-inch touchscreen running Uconnect 5 with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus a configurable digital driver display. On the safety side, the Cherokee comes with a broad suite of standard and available driver-assistance technology, including automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keeping assist. Exact availability varies by trim, with some systems standard across the lineup and others bundled into higher trims, so it is worth confirming the package on the specific Cherokee you are considering.
Trim differences
Because the powertrain and four-wheel drive are the same across the board, the right trim comes down to features. A popular sweet spot is the Limited, which tends to add the comfort and convenience features people actually use day to day without the top-trim premium. Not at launch. Jeep has not officially announced a 2026 Cherokee Trailhawk, and the trims available now are not Trail Rated, though spy shots suggest a more off-road-focused version may join later. That does not mean the current Cherokee is helpless off pavement: standard four-wheel drive, selectable Snow and Sand/Mud drive modes, and about 8 inches of ground clearance handle gravel roads, light trails, and bad weather. If a Trail Rated badge is a must-have, it is worth asking us to flag a Trailhawk if and when it is confirmed.
Service & ownership
The Cherokee carries Jeep’s standard coverage: a 3-year/36,000-mile basic limited warranty and a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain limited warranty, plus 5 years of corrosion protection and roadside assistance. Because it is a hybrid, the high-voltage battery and related components carry their own separate, longer warranty that runs well beyond the basic term, with the exact years and mileage depending on your state’s emissions rules. We can confirm the precise coverage on a specific VIN, and Mopar extended plans are available if you want protection past the factory window.
It is too new for model-specific reliability data: this is a clean-sheet vehicle with a brand-new powertrain, so long-term records do not exist yet. What we can say is that it uses Stellantis’ new 1.6-liter turbo-hybrid system, is assembled in Toluca, Mexico, and is backed by the factory warranty plus the extended high-voltage battery coverage above. As a non-plug-in hybrid it follows normal service intervals with no charging hardware to maintain, so sticking to the maintenance schedule is the biggest lever you control; our maintenance guide covers the intervals.
